Kinship Care
The University of California at Berkeley
estimates that one in ten grandparents will become a primary caregiver for a
grandchild.
Throughout Monroe County Kinship Caregivers find themselves parenting again
with: little or no financial assistance, legal rights or options, or knowledge
of community-based resources.
The 2000
U.S. Census data showed an increasing number of relative caregivers in the New
York and Rochester area.
Of the
11,551 children in the Rochester area living with relatives, 10,698 (92.3%) are
being raised by their grandparents.
